Beauty's Legacy: Gilded Age Portraits in America

Through March 9, 2014, “Beauty’s Legacy: Gilded Age Portraits in America” will be on display at the New York Historical Society Museum and Library on the upper West side of New York. The exhibit examines the remarkable, critical and popular resurgence of portraiture in the United States during the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century.

More than sixty works of art as well as period photographs and graphic materials are included with the goal of investigating the strong cultural and social legacy of the American portrait tradition. Beauty’s Legacy includes portraits of many prominent New York sitters, including Emma Thursday and Reverend Henry Codman Potter.
