Portraits, Inc. Co-Hosts Benefit for Local Children's Hospital

Portraits, Inc. is thrilled to announce the huge success of "Canvas for Children’s," an exciting new event supporting the Art Acquisition Fund for Children’s of Alabama!  On Thursday, March 8th, over 250 attendees filled the Birmingham, AL, galleries of Portraits, Inc., Loretta Goodwin Gallery and Matt Jones Gallery, coming together to show their support for Children’s, mingling, dancing to the music of local musicians, and enjoying the drinks and fare of caterers Café Iz and Aramark.  Guests had the honor of previewing works previously purchased for Children’s and the opportunity to sponsor a piece designated for the expansion facility, with all proceeds benefitting the Art Acquisition Fund.  An especially exciting portion of the night was the Mystery Art Sale, which included work from over 40 artists – identities unknown at the time of sale – who donated artwork to be sold to benefit Children’s.  Proceeds from sponsorships and the Mystery Art Sale raised more than $100,000, ensuring the continued development of a beautiful, healing, and peaceful home away from home for future Children’s patients and their families.

Children’s of Alabama commissioned or purchased work by several Portraits, Inc. artists, all of whom also generously donated work for the Mystery Art Sale.  Another highlight of the evening was the chance to watch one of our portrait artists paint a still life on site, which was later raffled off to a lucky winner.

Children’s of Alabama has provided specialized medical care for ill and injured children across the state and throughout the southeastern U.S. since 1911.  It is the only hospital in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. Ten of its divisions – pulmonology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology, neonatology, cancer, cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology and nephrology – were recently ranked among the best children’s hospital programs in the nation by US News & World Report. Children’s is recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Magnet-designated hospital for excellence in nursing care.  It is a private, not-for-profit hospital that serves as the primary site of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) pediatric medicine, surgery, research and residency programs. A 750,000-square-feet expansion is currently under construction and will open in June.  Last year, patients made more than 634,000 outpatient and nearly 14,000 inpatient visits to Children’s.
